Leaked UK memo says Trump axed Iran deal to spite Obama

Johnson says his comments about U.S. envoy were a factor in his resignation

Basu's warning stems from the leaked messages from the British ambassador in Washington, Kim Darroch, which found their way into the Mail on Sunday.

It is the second set of leaked emails published by The Mail On Sunday - last weekend they revealed that Sir Kim had described Mr Trump's administration as "inept" and "dysfunctional", a revelation that eventually led to the ambassador's resignation.

The Metropolitan Police has launched a criminal investigation into the alleged leak of diplomatic emails from Kim Darroch, the UK's ambassador in the U.S., where he called American President Donald Trump's administration "inept, insecure and incompetent", the media reported on Saturday.

It says the memo was written after the then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson appealed to the USA in 2018 to stick with the nuclear deal.

The former British Ambassador is said to have highlighted splits amongst USA presidential advisors and that the White House did not have a "day-to-day" strategy of what to do following withdrawal from the deal.

The White House responded by refusing to deal with him, and Trump branded the ambassador a "pompous fool" in a Twitter fusillade.

London's Metropolitan Police sparked widespread condemnation on Saturday after a warning to journalists that publishing leaked documents could be a criminal matter.

The newly-leaked Iran memo was sent by the envoy in May 2018, after Boris Johnson (who was then Foreign Secretary) had been sent to meet up with President Donald Trump in a bid to dissuade him against pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal, writes MailOnline.

The banner reads: "Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation should compensate and apologize to victims of forced labor". The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said that Seoul plans to file a complaint with the WTO.

United Kingdom police are hunting the culprits behind the leak - and, contentiously, warned journalists that publishing the documents "could also constitute a criminal offence".

British officials have launched an inquiry to find the person responsible for the leak and counter-terrorism police said yesterday they had launched a criminal investigation. Breaking the act carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, though prosecutions are rare. "Turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences", Basu's statement read.

The head of Britain's diplomatic service, Simon McDonald, said this week he was "bracing" himself for further leaks, which he described as "the worst breach of trust in our service in my career".

Assistant commissioner Neil Basu from New Scotland Yard announced police were launching a criminal investigation into the leaks.

"They should also be aware of the huge damage that has already been done and the potentially even greater damage to be done by further breaches of the Official Secrets Act", he said.

The ambassador indicated his decision to resign was influenced by Johnson's refusal, since he is overwhelmingly likely to be the next prime minister. "And, even when you pressed, none had anything much to say about the day after, or a Plan B, beyond reimposition of USA sanctions".

Iran has been scathing in its criticism of Trump's decision to pull out of the deal and the subsequent decisions to impose tough sanctions.
