U.S. House votes to curb Trump powers to start Iran War

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Calif. meets with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington Thursday

Ocasio-Cortez's distaste for Pelosi and other more "moderate" Democrats trickles down to her staff.

The hearing came as the number of families, children and other migrants entering the USA from Mexico has surged above 100,000 monthly since March, overwhelming federal agencies' ability to detain them in sanitary conditions or move them quickly to better housing.

The underlying annual defense bill, passed on Friday by a vote of 220-to-197, also includes several other contentious provisions. It removes a ban against transferring detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the United States that was enacted when Democrats controlled Congress in the early years of the Obama administration. The House also voted against measures from Reps.

But the Iran provision was the most noteworthy, with 27 Republicans bucking the White House to support the measure. Trump last month came within minutes of launching a missile strike against Iran in retaliation for Tehran's downing of a USA drone. Although the president called off the strike at the last minute, he has since threatened Iran with "obliteration" and warned that the USA would use "overwhelming force" if it attacked American assets or personnel.

"The House took a big step today in voting to block the Trump administration's path to war with Iran".

"It shows you how weak their argument is when they have to resort and direct racist accusations toward Speaker Pelosi.it's very disappointing to me", Clay said, The Hill reported.

Liberal Democrats tried, but failed, to reduce that number even further Friday, with an amendment to strip $16.8 billion in war funding from the bill.

He added: 'Right now, I can only see this fight and I already wish it was July 20. Recently, he has a new pronouncement, and that is, he is the new Manny Pacquiao .

Representative Matt Gaetz, a Republican, co-sponsored the amendment with Khanna.

"I deal with Nancy Pelosi a lot and we go back and forth and it's fine, but I think that a group of people is being very disrespectful to her", Trump told reporters on Friday, according to Mediaite. "The time has come for Congress to once again reassert its constitutional authority and speak decisively on matters of war and peace". In the months to come, lawmakers must come up with a compromise version between the one passed by the House and the one passed last month in the Senate, where Trump's fellow Republicans hold power. Many Republicans warned that restricting Trump's military options would be a risky step at a time when Iran has allegedly threatened USA assets in the region.

Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called the amendment "reckless", saying that the military should not be held up by a potentially lengthy legislative process. U.S. administrations have used an authorization of force passed by Congress after the September 11, 2001 attacks to justify a slew of operations around the world.

This comes as the divisions between new progressive House Democrats and the old guard begin to materialise.

Roy said by not toughening immigration laws, Democrats have "created the very magnet" that attracts migrants to the US and said the House "cowardly sits in the corner, doing nothing" to address the problems that result. He argued it was "an unnecessary, unsafe attempt" to weaken his constitutional power.
