Twitter back online after brief outage

Thursday afternoon, the micro-blogging site posted a message to their status website indicating that they were "investigating". "Thanks for noticing - we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon", a message on the website's homepage reads.

Twitter users nationwide were reporting the social networking site as down on Thursday.

Both sites were back up and running by 4 p.m.

"Some people may be able to access Twitter again and we're working to make sure Twitter is available to everyone as quickly as possible", it wrote in its update.

Twitter experiencing outages for several hours, with users across the USA and elsewhere reporting not being able to access the platform throughout the day.

According to downdetector, users on the east and west coasts of the US are being heavily affected.

The Twitter outage comes on the heels of a string of technical problems on Instagram and Facebook. Outages are relatively common and typically don't last longer than a few hours.

The highest user-reported incidents were from Western Europe and the US.

The outage occurred as President Donald Trump - an avid Twitter user - convened a White House conference of critics of Big Tech.

Trump, who has more than 60 million followers on Twitter and uses the platform extensively, nonetheless has complained that it suppresses some political viewpoints.
