Roger Federer downs Rafael Nadal to stay on title course — ATP Wimbledon

Roger Federer must win first set against Rafael Nadal says Woodbridge

Djokovic is a four-time champion at the All England Club and will play either Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on Sunday for another title.

This one felt like just as much of a classic contest, though, one that anyone present is not likely to forget. "It was tough at the end".

The Swiss star failed to capitalize on two match points in the penultimate game. "It's the semi-finals and Roberto was not overwhelmed - he's a very under-rated player", Djokovic, 32, said. "I'm excited to be back on Centre Court against him after 11 years", he says. I got a bit tight.

"I think today the backhand didn't work as good as in the previous rounds". So he deserve it.

Federer is an eight-time Wimbledon champion but both finals he has played against Djokovic at the famous venue, he has lost.

The Serb, who's also defending champion, won his semi-final against Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Federer's third match point - as his wife, Mirka, peeked through fingers covering her face - was a 24-stroke masterpiece that Nadal took with an inside-out forehand victor. From the outside it appeared like they were relaxed watching the first semifinal, perhaps even underappreciating Djokovic and Bautista Agut, regarding them as entrée to the main course of the other semifinal, between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The Centre Court crowd realised they had a real match on their hands and they were treated to a superb third set.

But he hit back swiftly in the third set, breaking Nadal for the first time after winning the point of the match with a breathtaking backhand volley in the fourth game. Another was that he was able to withstand Nadal's serve, which has improved a ton over the years. Nadal saved two more break points at 4-1 but Federer held serve the rest of the way, clinching the set when the Spaniard netted a forehand. He clung on at 3-5, saving two match points, then had a break point as Federer served for the match. "The match was played at a very high level", Federer told the BBC after the match. "But was late." Nadal said.

"He played great against Bautista Agut, who had a great tournament".

How to watch Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon semifinals
Djokovic is looking for his fifth Wimbledon title, while Bautista Agut is appearing in his first Grand Slam semifinal. Federer , 37, is the oldest man in the semi-finals of a Slam since 39-year-old Jimmy Connors at the 1991 US Open.

England beat Australia to reach Cricket World Cup final
Kumar Dharmasena and Marais Erasmus will umpire the World Cup final at Lord's on Sunday, it has been confirmed by the ICC. England's pace trio of Jofra Archer , Mark Wood and Chris Woakes have shared the same number of wickets between them.

This was the second major in a row where they've faced off: Nadal won their windy French Open semifinal last month en route to his 12th championship on the red clay there. But Wimbledon is Federer's dominion.

Nadal won that match 9-7 in the fifth set. "I went too much for it", the Spaniard said. Federer's only win against Djokovic at Wimbledon came in 2012, when he won a semi-final in four sets. "You go through these kinds of emotional moments, especially in big matches like this, all the time". Sometimes I show my emotions, sometimes I don't. Moments later, he was ending a 45-stroke baseline exchange - the longest on record at Wimbledon, where such stats date to 2006 - with a backhand victor to save a break point.

Nadal was denied the opportunity to win a third Wimbledon and 19th Grand Slam title, with Federer being handed the chance to win his 21st Major.

Bautista Agut, 31, was the final hurdle.

The party was postponed, and his buddies flew to England to join Bautista Agut's fiancee in cheering him on. He was managing his nerves in the first set but later on he established himself and started to play better.

After a flat forehand return victor off a 107 miles per hour serve on the very first point, Bautista Agut certainly did lose his way for a bit.

There was barely a cigarette paper between the two gladiators in a high-quality opening set crackling with tension. I'm just relieved it's all over at this point. He will remember his own frustration at how his game was derailed in the second set. Djokovic stopped his until-then-successful tactic of offering some variety and heading to the net when he could.

Djokovic rediscovered his best abilities, though.

Going by the number of strokes, it was the longest point ever recorded at Wimbledon. He double-faulted on his first set point but converted the second with a volley victor that clipped the net cord.

Shintaro Mochizuki became the first Japanese player to reach a junior boys' Grand Slam singles final after outlasting fourth-seeded American Martin Damm 6-1, 0-6, 10-8.
