Pence acknowledges conditions at border detention center are ‘tough stuff’

AOC Could Learn A Lot From Beto's Defense Of Border Patrol Agents In 2017

The Trump administration has agreed to allow a Stanford University pediatrician to conduct an independent investigation into health conditions for migrant children at US Customs and Border Protection facilities.

Pence's visit was the latest move by both political parties to use border trips to highlight their case for who is at fault for the border crisis caused by a surge in Central American migrants and what should be done to remedy it.

When reporters toured the facility before Pence, the men screamed that they'd been held there 40 days, some longer. He complained about "phony" reporting on conditions by the New York Times.

Also testifying Friday were Escobar and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., who said federal treatment of migrants has "exceeded a level of degradation we should be ashamed is occurring on American soil". Migrants have been held for weeks or months in facilities not created to hold them that long, drawing increasing criticism from congressional Democrats.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence made a surprise visit to Chabad of Poway in Southern California on Thursday, a month-and-a-half after a gunman killed a woman and injured three others during Shabbat-morning services on the last day of Passover, April 27. It was sweltering hot.

The German also dealt a significant blow to Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt by vowing to defend the controversial Northern Ireland backstop.

He added: "This is tough stuff". He said they were given deodorant after showering, but conceded numerous men had not showered for 10 or 20 days.

CNN's Pamela Brown asked Pence about the difference between the relatively cleaner and more comfortable facility for children and their families versus the overcrowded one with the single adult men.

"They're crowded because we have a lot of people, but they're in good shape", Trump said. This comes after a report from the Office of the Inspector General detailing unsafe overcrowding at Border Patrol facilities in the Rio Grande Valley. In another room, children, all under 8 years old, were seated in front of a television watching an animated Spanish film.

As Pence toured the facilities, a House committee was having a contentious, partisan debate back in Washington over how migrants have been treated.

Democrats have meanwhile demanded the Inspector General's office at the US Department of Homeland Security look into whether she or Kevin McAleenan, acting secretary of the agency, knew about officials sharing "violent, racist, misogynistic comments and pictures" in the group that was previously known as "I'm 10-15". "Please, American public", Lesko said, "there is no one asking people to drink out of toilets". Several children have died after crossing the border and being taken into federal custody.
