James Tedesco fires NSW to thrilling win in Origin decider

Matt Gillett has been ruled out of the State of Origin decider

New South Wales won game three in the final minutes as James Tedesco scored a late try to halt a Reds comeback and seal the series win.

The dramatic ending snapped a run of seven straight defeats in Origin deciders for the Blues, dating back to the start of the Maroons' dynasty in 2006.

TALKING POINTS: NSW halfback Mitchell Pearce finally lifted his first Origin shield after eight attempts.

Debutant Ethan Lowe then smothered a routine James Maloney bomb to turn defence into attack, and four tackles later prop Josh Papalii blasted past the NSW five-eighth to put Queensland back within two with four minutes on the clock.

Blues halfback Mitchell Pearce spread a cut-out pass to Tom Trbojevic, who drew a defender and then passed it out to Blake Ferguson, who just managed to stay in the field before laying on Tedesco for the victor. "It was pretty special to win the series past year but, to win it again, is magic".

When Lowe's conversion sailed through, Origin was seemingly set for a golden point contest in front of a sellout 82,565 crowd at ANZ Stadium.

Tedesco was enormous in crossing for two tries and running for 222 metres.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related, with the man remaining in custody at a central London police station. Since her ascension to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has lived through multiple royal security breaches.

With Queensland having enjoyed much of the early running and taking an 8-2 lead on 28 minutes, the fullback's first intervention in the game brought the Blues back even.

Being involved in one of the most dramatic finishes seen in the Origin arena recently was cold consolation to the Maroons on the full-time whistle.

It was the most penalties in the first half of an Origin match in 23 years, meaning the game was very stop-start and the 8-8 scoreline reflected that.

Maroons coach Kevin Walters was proud of his team's fightback.

"The tackle had been made, if I am reading the referee correctly", Ray Warren said in commentary. "But then we got the slow play-the-ball for some reason". He just ran out of time.

"I'm not going to be critical of anyone tonight".

Maroons utility Michael Morgan failed to finish the game after a copping a stray elbow to the head from McGuire in the second half.
