ICE raids could happen this weekend in major cities across the county

Thousands of undocumented immigrant family members will be arrested in raids beginning Sunday

Plans for the raids in June drew widespread scorn among immigration rights advocates and mayors in the impacted cities.

Mayor Libby Schaaf warned residents of an upcoming raid by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in 2018, President Donald Trump called it a "disgrace to our nation".

On Wednesday, acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director Ken Cuccinelli said the ICE raids are "absolutely going to happen" following a delay from the President to see if Congress could work out a legislative solution on immigration.

As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security.

The officials told the Times that ICE agents hope to arrest at least 2,000 immigrants who have been ordered deported but have remained in the country.

By comparison, ICE typically detains about 12,000 people per month, not including Border Patrol arrests near the border. We're taking them out legally.

Chalk it up to the increasing political radioactivity of anything touching on the immigration issue - a factor that's left Congress paralyzed even as United States immigration laws, and the whole enforcement apparatus, grow increasingly obsolescent.

According to Gutierrez, Schwab's story is just one example of government officials perpetuating lies about immigration under the Trump administration.

"We try to do our best to keep everything very close to the vest", Arcos said.

The planned raids divided the top leaders at the Department of Homeland Security. Those who ICE manages to round up will be held in detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania, or in hotel rooms when space isn't available.

"In anticipation of the Trump Administration's threatened ICE raids, we are proactively reaching out to our immigrant communities to make sure they know we stand with them and are prepared to do whatever we can to protect them", Murphy's statement said.

The scope of the enforcement will likely be far less ambitious than Trump first suggested in his June 17 tweet.

Trump started hinting anew in recent days that more removals were coming.

But the president, speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, said he did not share those concerns, as the deportations were not a secret. So, we must say it clearly: This is unbearable to the undocumented immigrant community and demands a massive response on the part of our progressive forces in the country.

In a hearing on the subject on Friday at the U.S. House of Representatives, some Democrats said they feared the forthcoming arrests could result in more immigrant children being separated from their families. "This brutal action will terrorize children and tear families apart".

Meanwhile, activists ramped up efforts to prepare by bolstering know-your-rights pocket guides, circulating information about hotlines and planning public demonstrations.

According to the Pew Research Center, there are about 10.5 million undocumented migrants in the United States, and two-thirds have been in the country more than 10 years.
