Hong Kong protesters march with mock coffin of city leader

Hong Kong government says controversial extradition bill is 'dead'

The march on Friday marks the one-month anniversary of the start of major protests sparked by Lam's proposal to change the extradition laws to allow suspects to be sent to mainland China to face trial.

He praised Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Hong Kong's chief executive, for her efforts, saying she and her team were persevering in "governance in accordance with the law" and that they were "not avoiding hard tasks".

"We want to raise awareness in Washington that the United States has to do more now to help Hong Kong become fully democratic", said a resident of the nearby town of Fanling, who was one of five people in the crowd carrying USA flags.

Even though the government has made it clear that it will let the bill expire without action at the end of a legislative session in July next year, protests have continued, calling for its complete withdrawal and for Lam's resignation.

They marched to a police barricade at a protest site and bowed their heads for a moment of silence to mourn several young people who have died in recent weeks, including a man who fell to his death after unfurling banners against the legislation and a woman who left a suicide message.

In another room, children, all under 8 years old, were seated in front of a television watching an animated Spanish film. When reporters toured the facility before Pence, the men screamed that they'd been held there 40 days, some longer.

The protest in the town of Sheung Shui is the latest in a string of demonstrations that has roiled the former British colony for more than a month, fueling its biggest political crisis since China regained control in 1997.

More rallies are planned this weekend at two shopping districts near China's border that are popular with Chinese visitors.

"Hence, the central government firmly supports Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the Special Administrative Region government continue to govern effectively and actively make a difference in accordance with the law, firmly supports Hong Kong Police to do their duties in accordance with the law". "We want to ask Carrie Lam, when are you going to speak the truth?"

Wang repeated a Chinese government assertion that "foreign forces" were behind the unrest, and a small number of Hong Kong people were willing to be used to create trouble. Beijing-appointed Lam, who is not directly elected, and her government haven't acted in the people's interest, he said.

Thursday marked the first time Wang openly spoke on the extradition bill saga after he met with Hong Kong delegates of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, and local deputies of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's legislature, in mid-June to express Beijing's support for suspension of the proposed law amendments.

A memorial service has been held in Hong Kong for a protester who committed suicide.
