Turbulence reportedly injures 35 passengers, forces plane to divert to Hawaii

Sudden turbulence’ leaves multiple people injured aboard Air Canada flight forces emergency landing in Hawaii

Two hours past Hawaii, the plane was met with "unforecasted and sudden turbulence" and the Boeing 777-200LR turned around around and headed for Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

A spokesperson for Air Canada told CTV News, "Preliminary information indicates there are about 25 people who have sustained minor injuries". The plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Honolulu airport.

Passengers told news reporters the turbulence tossed people into the air, some hitting the ceiling.

"There was no warning and then half of them, their head hit the roof all at once", he said. Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said injuries included cuts, bumps, bruises, neck pain and back pain.

Luke Wheeldon told the Honolulu news station KTIV about half the passengers had not been wearing seatbelts.

In a statement Air Canada said that the injuries were considered minor and that medical personnel were examining the passengers.

Medical crews were on the ground when the plane landed to check on the 269 passengers and 15 crew members on board.

The turbulence happened at 10,973 metres about 966 kilometres southwest of Honolulu, said US Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

Flight 33 was travelling from Toronto to Sydney, with a pit stop in between.

The airline is now making arrangements for passengers, including hotel accommodations and meals in Honolulu, as well as providing flight options, Mr. Fitzpatrick added.
