Marisnick suspended 2 games for Lucroy collision

Houston Astros Jake Marisnick left checks on Los Angeles Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy

The Angels catcher sustained a concussion and broken nose.

Marisnick is appealing the suspension and will be available Thursday night when the Astros play the Texas Rangers in Arlington. For me, I was running and I see him take a step kind of up the line like he's going to drop and go back so I tried to take an in step and slide head first on the inside corner.

The play earned Marisnick a two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine.

Lucroy was carted off the field after the collision at the end of the eighth inning of a home game the Astros won in 10 innings.

Marisnick was originally ruled safe at home - and represented the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from George Springer - but was subsequently called out after his play was deemed illegal following a review. Through 72 games and 194 plate appearances this season, Marisnick is hitting.250/.309/.466 with eight home runs, 12 doubles, a triple and six steals.

"After thoroughly reviewing the play from all angles, I have concluded that Jake's actions warrant discipline", MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre said in a statement acquired by Chandler Rome of The Houston Chronicle. If Marisnick does not appeal the punishment, he'll begin serving it tonight.

The umpires determined that Marisnick veered out of the baseline and lowered his shoulder to make contact with Lucroy.

Marisnick said afterward that it was a "bad play" and that he hoped Lucroy was OK.

Marisnick's Astros teammates on Sunday defended him in the comments and on social media. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina blasted Marisnick on Instagram, calling it a " bulls-t play". "Major League Baseball should probably take a look at it and consider some type of suspension, quite frankly". I walked him through what I was seeing.
