Amazon Game Studios announced its new project: an MMO game based on the narrative universe of the Lord of the Rings, developed in collaboration with Leyou. The game's plot hasn't been explicitly revealed, but it will allow players to roam Middle-earth alongside other players from around the world. That said, it'll likely drop around the same time the new TV series premieres. If both the game and show are set far apart from the books or movies then perhaps the game and TV show will take place at the same time.

In regard to their partnership, Leyou CEO Alex Xu stated that their "combined resources and expertise will result in a attractive and compelling game that customers will love and play for years to come". In June reports surfaced that Amazon Game Studios had laid off dozens of employees, a move the company described as "reorganising".

The as-of-yet untitled Lord of the Rings game will be a "massively multiplayer" online roleplaying game - a genre popularised by the likes of "World of Warcraft and 'Everquest". It is a global market leader in the market of free-to-play multiplayer online games.

At the moment there is no release date slated for Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO, which could suggest that its not coming anytime soon. Nor will it touch on the same events as Lord of the Rings Online, the MMO that was launched back in 2007 and still runs today. We will have to wait for new details.
