One noteworthy example: After Jobs co-established Apple, he structured a company NeXT that rendered a costly debacle of a computer. "I was like a minor wizard because he would be casting spells, and I would see people mesmerized, but because I'm a minor wizard, the spells don't work on me", Gates said, referring to Jobs's notorious "reality distortion field".

Now a philanthropist with a fortune estimated at $107 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gates said he's "not pushing quite as insanely".

Bill Gates may have relied on his own demanding work ethic to turn Microsoft into the software powerhouse that it became, but in regard to Apple, Gates said that Steve Jobs found success in part by "casting spells".

Gates did also say that Jobs could also be an "asshole" at times, but he managed to bring some incredible positivity along with his toughness.

After Mr Jobs' death in 2011, Tim Cook took over as Apple CEO and made its $1-trillion company. The Microsoft CEO stated that Jobs had a way of picking talent and hyper-motivating that talent. While other people were all enticed with Jobs' practices, Gates never fell for the spells as he calls himself a minor wizard. Apple was nearly bankrupt when Jobs was reunited with the company in the late 1990s. "Steve is really a singular case where the company was on a path to die and it goes and becomes the most valuable company in the world with some products that are really quite fantastic".

Isaacson was speaking to the news that Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive is leaving Apple, and what that could mean for the company going forward.

When the focus turned to Microsoft, Gates admitted things went "too far" in terms of the intense work culture.

"We had, to some degree, a self-selected set of people who were mostly males, I'll admit, and yes, we were pretty tough on each other", Gates said.
