Trump says he won't fire Kellyanne Conway for Hatch Act violations

Kellyanne Conway is seen at the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington DC

Conway reportedly said if they were trying to silence her with the Hatch Act, "it's not going to work". "A person wouldn't be able to express themselves, and I just don't see it". "She's got to have a right of responding to questions".

"No, I'm not going to fire her", Trump said during an interview on Fox & Friends on June 14.

On Thursday, the Office of Special Counsel Henry Kerner issued a letter recommending the dismissal of Conway, citing "numerous violations of the Hatch Act". "I think she's a terrific person, she's a tremendous spokesperson, she's been loyal, she's been - she's just a great person, I would certainly not think - based on what I saw yesterday, how could you do that?" Still, he was deferential to Trump, making clear the decision on whether to remove Conway is his alone.

Cipollone said that the office provided the White House with a copy of the report on Conway at 5 p.m. on May 29 and demanded a response by 9 a.m. the following morning. He said this was "not some sort of a drop-it-on-them situation".

The White House on Thursday had slammed the report as "unprecedented" and suggested it was politically influenced.
