Statement from Harriett Baldwin on Ebola in Uganda

Ugandans concerned at reports of Ebola cases in the country.

The boy's three-year-old brother has also been infected with the virus, AP reported.

The current Ebola epidemic began in August 2018 in eastern DR Congo and has infected at least 2,062 people, killing 1,390 of them.

"Uganda remains in Ebola response mode to follow up the 27 contacts (of the family)", the statement said.

On June 13, the World Health Organization confirmed that experts will meet on Friday, June 14, to determine whether the Ebola outbreak should be declared 'a public health emergency of global concern.' This will be the third time the emergency committee has convened to discuss the potential.

Uganda's health ministry said all members of the Congolese-Ugandan family, including a six-month-old baby, have been sent to Congo for monitoring and experimental treatments as part of clinical trials.

Two people have died so far in the latest Ebola outbreak in Uganda, the Daily Monitor reported.

The World Health Organization says there's no evidence Ebola is spreading within Uganda after the deadly virus crossed the border from Congo this week.

East Africa has been on high alert since the outbreak was declared in the eastern DRC provinces of North Kivu and Ituri.

However, it is unlikely to benefit any commercial airliners unless Pakistan reciprocates and opens its complete airspace. Pakistan, however, has extended its partial airspace ban on eastern border with India until 14 June.

At the border, health workers checked lines of people and isolate one child with a raised temperature, a Reuters journalist said.

They and frontline health workers are due to be vaccinated Friday with a new drug created to protect them against the virus, the health ministry said. Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan have been preparing for possible cases. The decision in both instances was due to Ebola's containment within the DRC.

The WHO panel has used the label "public health emergency of worldwide concern" for only four previous epidemics.

Meanwhile, new research from Cambridge University released on Thursday indicates that half of all Ebola outbreaks have gone undetected since the virus was discovered in 1976.

"Knowing that Ebola is rarely detected within the first few cases emphasises the importance of having widely available infection control and diagnostic resources", Emma Glennon, from Cambridge's Department of Veterinary Medicine, told AFP.

The viral disease spreads through contact with bodily fluids, causing hemorrhagic fever with severe vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding.

Chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines can also become infected, and humans who kill and eat these animals can catch the virus through them.

It is the worst on record after an epidemic that struck Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone between 2014-2016, leaving more than 11 300 people dead.
