Man charged with murder of three people including Dallas trans woman

Transgender Women Deaths-Texas

A man was arrested in connection with the slayings of two transgender women in Dallas - including one who was seen being attacked in an online video weeks before her death, cops said.

Transgender rights activists protest the recent killings of three transgender women, Muhlaysia Booker, Claire Legato, and Michelle Washington, during a rally at Washington Square Park in NY on May 24.

During the course of investigating these two cases, detectives recognized that Arrestee Lyles drove the same type auto that is believed to have picked up Muhlaysia Booker on May 18, 2019.

Lyles has been charged so far with three counts of murder, including the May 18 murder of Muhlaysia Booker.

Kendrell Lyles, 34, shot to death Muhlaysia Booker on May 18, a woman on May 22 and a man on May 23, police Major Max Geron said. Cell phone analysis indicates that Lyles frequented the Spring/Lagow area and that he was in that area at the time Booker was picked up the night she died.

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) said that at least 26 trans people were killed across the USA a year ago - the majority of whom were African-American trans women. In early June, police launched a homicide investigation into the death of 26-year-old Chynal Lindsey, a transgender woman found floating in White Rock Lake in northeastern Dallas. Her death was ruled unexplained by the Dallas County medical examiner. Police are also looking to see if he could be linked to the deaths of other transgender women in the city.

Moore praised Dallas PD detectives for having done "an excellent job in investigating these cases", commending them for "their diligence and coordination".

Booker also was beaten in April when she was involved in a traffic crash near a Dallas apartment building.

Police said the assault was flagged as a hate crime.

A video of the incident showed a man putting on gloves and punching her repeatedly, giving her a concussion and a broken wrist.

Edward Thomas, 29, was arrested two days later and charged with aggravated assault.

The Washington Post has previously reported that black transgender women are disproportionately likely to experience a violent attack.
