Huawei’s Android replacement is one step closer to becoming a reality

Huawei’s appeal to Android developers won’t work without these key factors

Well, just in case you missed it - the company has apparently shipped about a million devices with HongMeng OS, although oddly not on new devices because this is for testing goal.

Huawei wants to release Hongmeng early next year after facing a blacklisting by the U.S. government.

President Trump's move in recent weeks to put Huawei on a blacklist that bans United States companies from doing business with the Chinese brand nearly immediately led to chatter that Huawei's ambition of one day being the biggest smartphone maker in the world just got kneecapped.

A senior USA official on Thursday said Huawei's clients should be asking themselves if the Chinese firm can meet its commitments given its dependence on U.S. companies.

Information that made the rounds last month indicated that HongMeng could be finalized for Chinese devices as soon as this fall, whereas the global debut could take place in 2020.

Previously, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business, said that the HongMeng OS for the worldwide market will be ready by the first half of 2020. "But if we can not use that, Huawei will prepare the plan B to use our own OS".

That news comes via Reuters, which notes that Huawei has started filing for the Hongmeng trademark in countries like Cambodia, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, and Peru. The in-house software is said to be compatible with all Android applications and has "increased security functions to protect personal data", according to media reports.

But the world's number one manufacturer of telecommunications equipment and number two vendor of smartphones is sure doing everything it can to be prepared for any and all scenarios, including an increasingly likely situation in which the company would need to quickly roll out a homebrewed replacement for the most popular mobile operating system. A Tianfeng Securities analyst thinks an October release is on the cards, but at least at first, Huawei could keep the OS exclusive to low-end devices, as its features may not initially meet the needs of high-end users outside of China.

The report also mentions that Huawei has been developing its own Android alternative together with Tencent representatives. Giant firms, including Samsung, Amazon, and Microsoft, have tried and failed to take on the smartphone duopoly of Android and Apple's iOS.
