Huawei cancels laptop launch due to U.S. ban

Yu said the situation was unfortunate and said that the new product would have been revealed this week but without a release date.

Mr. Yu acknowledged that the laptop could be launched at a later date, but said that would depend on how long the company faces US sanctions effectively barring it from the American market.

Just days later however the US Commerce Department announced a 90-day delay to the imposition of trade restrictions on Huawei, but the Chinese firm said that the extension didn't "mean much". Once Huawei landed on that list, US companies became unable to provide Huawei with hardware or software without first obtaining a waiver from the USA government.

This refers to a list of foreign parties that the US Department of Commerce has judged to pose a potential national security or foreign policy threat. Huawei will be listed on the Entity List under the destination of China.

He said that being on the US Entity List had caused the cancellation. Some of the affiliates are in other countries like Canada, Japan, Brazil, the UK, Singapore and others. But the computers represent Huawei's biggest consumer success in the United States to date, and the retreat could be the most visible sign yet of the damage the trade war is inflicting on the company.

China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will need more time to become the world's largest smartphone maker, a goal it originally aimed to achieve in the fourth quarter of this year, a senior executive said on Tuesday. But neither has shipped as yet.

On Monday, we reported that Huawei's PC business might be the worst hit with the on-going United States ban following reports that the tech giant had ordered deliveries and development of new PCs be suspended. However the MateBook X Pro was pulled from the Microsoft Store online in mid-May. So far, the company has not experienced any disruption in existing business as it tries to mitigate the effect of the ban through stockpiling components and looking to create an alternate OS for its devices.
