Gatland to coach the Lions

Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg was injured on the Lions tour of 2017 before the Test matches

Gatland will leave his role as Wales coach after this year's World Cup in Japan and will become only the second person after Sir Ian McGeechan to take charge of the Lions on three consecutive tours.

"I'm done", he said, apparently without room for manoeuvre, so upset was he by the "disgusting campaign" he felt had been waged against him by the New Zealand media.

The 55-year-old steps down as Wales coach after this year's World Cup and while he has expressed an interest in taking an extended break after 11 years with the current Six Nations champions, he will be free to take up consultancy work before beginning with the Lions. "I have been head coach with Waikato and won a championship there, and I want to challenge myself with Super Rugby".

"This was a unanimous decision from the Lions board and it was important that we moved swiftly and proactively to secure Warren's signature", he said.

Gatland said after the last Lions tour that he was frustrated by limited time given to prepare the team and by the shortened nature of the tour.

Gatland revealed he "couldn't turn his back" on the challenge and aims to complete some unfinished business in South Africa.

You`re consuming plastic equivalent to one credit card every week
The website uses the study's findings to approximate consumers' likely personal weekly plastic consumption. But that doesn't mean plastics isn't a major problem, he added.

That came after Gatland led the Lions - a team made up of players from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland - to a series win against Australia in 2013.

Warren Gatland has left the door ajar for extra time to be added should a third deciding test be required to separate the British and Irish Lions and Springboks in 2021.

"When I reflected back on New Zealand the hospitality we had there; the atmosphere in the games was incredible".

"I can categorically tell you now I will definitely not be coaching England", Gatland told TalkSport. "Do you go with a few more pre-conceived ideas about a test team and perhaps pick accordingly? Alun Wyn Jones comes to mind at the moment, Owen Farrell too". "But two years is a long time and you never know what's going to happen in the game".

Lions chairman Jason Leonard, who played on the victorious 1997 tour, said: "One of Warren's greatest strengths is the ability to galvanise a group quickly and the last two Lions tours have shown that Warren understands and truly loves the Lions". "We had the All Blacks and the Lions intermingled and with Sam Warburton and Kieran Read holding the trophy aloft and that's now one of the most iconic rugby photos of all time".
