American Airlines extends Boeing 737 MAX cancellations to September

The 737 MAX 7 features a modified split-scimitar winglet

Ethiopian Airlines, Wednesday said it will be the last airline to operate the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft after the ongoing remodeling, adjustment and re-certification by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), in the US.

"American Airlines remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing in coordination with our union partners, will lead to recertification of the aircraft soon", the airline said in a statement announcing the new cancellations.

"It is not possible to advance an exact date while working on security solutions for the aircraft "said Ali Bahrami, a partner administrator for aviation security for the USA regulator, in an interview during an aviation security conference in Cologne, Germany".

Boeing Co. said Tuesday it handed over 56 percent fewer airplanes in May compared with a year earlier, as deliveries of its top-selling 737 MAX jet remained suspended following a deadly crash in March.

Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said that because the timeline for the plane's return to service is unknown, the airline has removed all 737 Max aircraft from its schedule until at least September 2.

On Wednesday, American Airlines Chief Executive Doug Parker said he believed it was "highly likely" that the MAX would be flying again by mid-August.

The crashes of a Lion Air 737 MAX in Indonesia in October 2018 and of an Ethiopian Airlines jet of the same model in March brought to light malfunctions in the plane's MCAS anti-stall system.

FAA spokesman Greg Martin said the agency has "no timetable" for allowing the 737 Max to resume flying and will act "only when it is safe to return to service". A combined 346 people were killed in the crashes five months apart.

Boeing on June 11 reported it had booked no new aircraft orders in May and had recorded a net total, after deducting cancellations, of 15 in the first five months of this year after the removal of 82 737 MAX orders as a result of contractual changes.
