Trump calls French wine tariffs unfair, vows to ‘do something' about it

Mexico's peso rallied against the dollar in response to news that the US had dropped threatened tariffs on imports from the country

US President Donald Trump revealed that Mexico agreed to take stronger legal action to halt Central American migrants if its initial efforts to stem the flow don't show results in 45 days.

Trump resumed his pressure on Mexico in a series of tweets, three days after granting a reprieve from tariffs that could have spelled disaster for the country's economy - his strategy to get the Mexican government to do more to stop the surge of Central Americans arriving at the USA border.

President Trump said it took two days to get what he wanted from Mexico thanks to the tariff threat.

Many migrants say they are afraid of returning to their home countries, which triggers a USA immigration court process that can take months or years to resolve due to backlogs in the system.

Trump announced on June 7 that the United States and Mexico reached an agreement about stemming migration.

Another 45-day grace period if the United States feels uncomfortable with the deal.

"In here is everything you want to talk about, it's right here", he said, without opening it up.

But that deal faced criticism after it was reported that the agreement did not significantly change or augment plans for stemming the flow of migration toward the United States that the two nation's hadn't already agreed to, according to NBC. Instead, Trump has to look to Mexico, and given the blunderbuss weapon he was wielding, the deal that was announced over the weekend is welcome, and better than could reasonably have been expected. They include the deployment of 6000 Mexican soldiers to the southern border with Guatemala and allowing Central Americans to wait in Mexico until their asylum claims, most of which are fraudulent, are processed.

3m Sudan strikes bring country to standstill
The US's top diplomat for Africa is going to Sudan this week amid unrest, the state department said on Monday. The TMC said the arrests were the result of an investigation into last week's crackdown.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador named Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard - his point man for the negotiations in Washington that produced Friday's deal - as the top official on the committee.

The president said that it's his "option" as to whether the undisclosed agreement will go into effect. If that fails, Mexico has agreed to consider a longstanding US demand that Central American asylum seekers crossing through Mexico apply for refuge there, not the United States, making Mexico a "safe third country", a demand that Mexico has long rejected.

That document says the countries discussed a "possible deal" to process asylum-seekers in whichever country they arrive in first.

"Here's the agreement. It's a very simple agreement".

USA tariffs would nearly certainly set back the efforts of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - commonly known as AMLO - to cement his ruling National Regeneration Movement as the most powerful political force in Mexico. The U.S. also committed to accelerating asylum claims while Mexico said it will "offer jobs, healthcare and education according to its principles".

Mexican government documents said it was "the first time in recent history that Mexico has chose to take operational control of its southern border as a priority".

"You're not going to see it anywhere".

Ebrard said Mexico would begin deploying its National Guard to the southern border on Wednesday.
