House Democrats to get more Mueller evidence; Trump calls witness 'sleazebag'

President Donald Trump continues to try to shake off allegations that he obstructed justice in the Russia meddling investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller

After opening statements from Nadler and Collins, John Dean compared specific findings in the Mueller report to Watergate.

Some of the president's allies have encouraged Democrats to take the leap - they say that brazen action against the president could help him to get reelected.

It is unclear if the deal, announced moments before the start of a judiciary committee hearing with Watergate star witness John Dean, will ultimately be enough for Democrats, who have called for the full, unredacted report and underlying documentation from the special counsel's work. "Special counsel Mueller has provided this committee with a road map".

Mueller's report found Russia meddled in the 2016 USA presidential election and that Trump's election campaign had multiple contacts with Russian officials.

"Don McGahn, voluntarily and with the president's approval, already met with Robert Mueller in a report that is now public and they are asking him to testify on issues he has already disclosed information on", Rossi said.

"If the Justice Department proceeds in good faith, and we are able to obtain everything that we need, then there will be no need to take further steps", Nadler said.

"That is very, very serious, and we need to get to the bottom of it and we need to know who participated in that from Russian Federation, from the United States or from both", Hoyer said.

"Today Chairman Nadler brings in front of the judiciary committee a guy to talk about obstruction of justice, a guy who went to prison in 1974 for obstructing justice", Jordan said. We are starting with the Mueller report which shows ample evidence of multiple crimes of obstruction of justice and abuse of power.

The Justice Department will continue to cooperate with the committee, under their agreement, as long as Democrats hold off on the contempt vote, Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said.

Nadler's announcement comes after the Judiciary Committee voted to hold Barr in contempt last month, after the Justice Department did not comply with a subpoena seeking access to an unredacted version of Mueller's Russian Federation report, as well as underlying documents and evidence.

Napolitano explained the legal implications of the deal struck between Barr and House Judiciary chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) during a morning appearance on Fox & Friends.

Mueller's investigation is part of a broad fight between Trump and congressional Democrats, who are investigating his policies, conduct in office and private businesses.

Some Democrats have said it's now their responsibility to determine whether Trump acted in a way that would provide grounds for impeachment.

"Democrats are abandoning their duty to confront foreign interference in our elections in favor of drawing out their slanderous campaign against the president", he said.

When the committee threatened Barr with contempt of Congress charges, the White House responded by invoking executive privilege over the information in question.
