Papua New Guinea is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, to the east of Indonesia and north of eastern Australia. It was centred at a relatively shallow depth of 10km, it said. The reported epicentre lies within the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of regular seismic activity.

However, earthquakes have sometimes caused major landslides and parts of the country are still recovering from a series of powerful earthquakes in February and March of 2018, killing more than 200 people and injuring thousands more.

Along the South Solomon trench, an area of the Pacific that includes Papua New Guinea, there have been more than a dozen quakes of magnitude 7.5 or more recorded since 1900, according to USGS data.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
