Amazon looks to make employees a driver offer they can’t refuse

Amazon to employees We'll pay you to quit and haul packages

To deliver packages faster, Amazon past year introduced a program to encourage more entrepreneurs to start their own package delivery businesses.

The program provides $10,000 in funding and will pay the equivalent of the employee's salary with Amazon for three months while they get the business off the ground.

Amazon says it will pay up to $10,000 in costs for employees who are accepted into the new delivery program.

The expansion is part of the company's plan to gain more control over its deliveries rather than rely on UPS, the post office and other carriers.

The offer comes as the company tries to decrease its shipping times for Amazon Prime members.

The partnership program is part of Amazon's work to vastly expand its shipping capabilities and help it deliver packages even faster.

Clark said feedback from employees who expressed interest in starting businesses revealed that they "struggled with the transition". "Now we have a path for those associated with an appetite for opportunities to own their own businesses".

Launched in June 2018, the partner program has helped 200 start-ups recruit thousands of Amazon's drivers, the company said. Across the United States, more than 12,000 people have already taken part in Amazon's Career Choice program where Amazon pre-pays up to 95% of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, up to $12,000, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. It is looking to expand this to "hundreds more" this year.

John Felton is Amazon's vice president of global delivery services.

Amazon also has its own airplanes handling freight and has been testing drones and delivery robots. "We expect the efficiency savings will be re-invested in new services for customers, where new jobs will continue to be created".
