Explorer reaches deepest spot on Earth in historic dive

In a four-hour dive earlier this month, Vescovo and his team undertook the deepest dive ever made by a human inside a submarine named DSV Limiting Factor.

Vescovo hopes his discovery of trash in the Mariana Trench will raise awareness of how much is dumped in the oceans, and will pressure governments to better enforce existing regulations, or put new ones in place.

Canadian filmmaker James Cameron was the last to visit the location in 2012 in his submarine, when he reached a depth of 10,908 metres.

The submarine "Limiting Factor" is prepared at a drop point above the Mariana Trench.

Vescovo's mission also discovered less than exciting findings: plastic bags and candy wrappers at the bottom of the trench. The dive is part of an initiative to explore the deepest points in each of the world's five oceans.

Plastic waste has been discovered on a record-breaking dive to the depths of the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench.

In the depths, during those five dives, they discovered red and yellow rocky outcrops that could be chemical deposits or bacterial mats, which are made by chemosynthetic microbes, meaning they can convert carbon-containing molecules into organic matter.

In the last three weeks, the expedition has made four dives in the Mariana Trench in Mr Vescovo's submarine, DSV Limiting Factor, collecting biological and rock samples.

"It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did", Mr Vescovo said after arriving in Guam after the completion of the dives.

A post-outbreak review found that approximately 20% of cases were reported in people from the Pacific islands, particularly Samoa. The AMA has also urged the federal government to fund universal catch-up vaccinations for all Australians through the NIP.

The 'Five Deeps' expedition has already successfully reached the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

He is attempting to become the first person to travel to the deepest part of the Earth's five oceans and needs only one more dive to complete the Five Deeps: the Molloy Deep in the Arctic Ocean at 18,599 feet.

As well as working under pressure, the sub has to operate in the pitch black and near freezing temperatures.

Vescovo says he's proud of these scientific finds - and also that the team's got a submersible that's up for the challenge.

The expedition is being filmed for Discovery Channel.

Anthony Geffen, creative director of Atlantic Productions, said it was the most complicated filming he'd ever been involved with. "That is the story of our species, and I am just so happy that even if in a small way, I have been able to contribute to forward progress".

After the Five Deeps expedition is complete later this year, the plan is to pass the submersible onto science institutions so researchers can continue to use it.

"I was proud and honoured to have been invited to be part of Victor's team when it made world history at Challenger Deep".

Once thought to be remote, desolate areas, the deep sea teems with life. They also found pollution.
