Elon Musk: Here are SpaceX's first 60 Starlink internet-beaming satellites

SpaceX Starlink satellites shown crammed on a Falcon ready for launch

Musk confirmed that the satellites are "production design", but they lack certain network components.

"This next batch of satellites will really be a demonstration set for us to see the deployment scheme and start putting our network together", Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer, said at the Satellite 2019 conference in Washington DC, according to SpaceNews.

The Starlink constellation is Musk's idea of how to give the underserved parts of the world access to broadband internet connectivity.

Initially, SpaceX planned on launching 4,425 Starlink satellites into orbits that ranged between 1,110 to 1,325 kilometers; however, due to data gathered from its first two space tests, SpaceX changed its mind, now wanting to launch a quarter of those in different orbits.

The satellites look snugly packed inside the Falcon 9 rocket's nose cone in a picture Musk tweeted.

China will "never surrender" in trade row
He said officials might be anxious companies may shift operations out of China in response to "aggressive retaliatory actions". Trump has accused China of reneging on commitments it made during months of trade negotiations, which Beijing has denied.

The roadster launch, the first test mission of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, used a fairing of the same size as the Falcon 9.

However, the 60 satellites that will be launched this week differ from the TinTin - while they have antennas that will allow them to communicate with Earth, they will not be capable of communicating with each other in orbit.

The duo seemed to perform well, according to Musk and SpaceX investors, though the company did end up keeping the satellites in a lower orbit than originally planned.

As one Twitter user noted in response to Musk, six additional launches of 60 satellites comes to 420 statellites total.

Musk anticipates that "much will likely go wrong" during the first few missions. The company is one of several, including Jeff Bezos' Amazon, which are building these so called "constellations" of interconnected satellites to deliver high speed Internet from space. Now, the tech giant hopes to launch those satellites at 550 kilometers, which was approved by the FCC.
