Actress Felicity Huffman pleads guilty in US college-admissions scandal

Felicity Huffman facing charges in a nationwide college admissions cheating scheme leave federal court in Boston

In a mea culpa a month earlier, Huffman said she would not contest the government's allegations and apologized to the public and her friends, family and daughter, who Huffman said knew nothing of the test-fixing scheme.

Huffman took full responsibility for her actions, seemingly absolving her daughter, Sophia Grace Macy, of being involved.

Huffman, 56, pleaded guilty Monday afternoon to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. According to reports from the scene, prosecutors have recommended a sentence of four months in prison and a fine of $20,000 for Huffman. She was among 13 parents who have said they would plead guilty in the scam.

William "Rick" Singer, a California college admissions consultant, pleaded guilty in March to charges that he facilitated the cheating and helped bribe university sports coaches to present clients' children as fake athletic recruits.

Rosen noted that she discussed the scheme with Singer, including troubles getting her daughter's testing location and proctor changed after she was granted extra time on the exam.

Huffman is the latest high-profile parent to admit her role in the largest college admissions scandal ever prosecuted.

The Desperate Housewives actress appeared in court on Monday to officially plead guilty in the case.

Felicity Huffman said "everything else (the prosecutor) said I did, I did". On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Times notes, prosecutors have said they would recommend capping her sentence at just four months.

Eric Rosen, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of MA said that prosecutors are also looking for one-year of supervised release and around $20,000 in fines.

"My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her", the statement continued.

Still, as of her most recent appearance in court, Huffman's fate remains unknown, though it's possible she could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison for the conspiracy charge.

Huffman and Macy agreed to it, according to a FBI affidavit filed in federal court.

Sloane, the water systems executive, paid Singer and an alleged accomplice $250,000 to ensure that Sloane's son, who attended the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, was admitted to USC as a recruited water polo player.

Some parents and coaches who have agreed to plead guilty are co-operating with prosecutors against current or future co-defendants, but Huffman is not known to be among them.

Parents still fighting the charges include fellow actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli.
