The Federal Communications Commission has issued an alert to consumers about a new wave of "One Ring" robocalls after "widespread overnight calling" in the states of NY and Arizona. Whether the number is associated with Mauritania or some other country is beside the point-public officials are telling consumers not to answer calls from foreign numbers unless they're expected. Also known as "Wangiri", is Japanese for "one ring and drop". According to the FCC, the way the scam works is this: Your phone rings once, you think you have missed a call, so you call the number back.

Check your phone bill for charges you don't recognize.

The agency recommended not calling back unrecognized numbers, especially those that appear to be from overseas.

"They put 100 million calls out, and they know 1% converts into sales", Prugar said, referring to those behind the robocalls.
