Jallianwala Bagh massacre: Rahul visits memorial, salutes people of India

UK's Labour Party Wants'Unequivocal Apology For Jallianwala Bagh

"Their memory inspires us to work even harder to build an India they would be proud of", Modi said.

As India marks the 100th anniversary of the Amritsar massacre - one of the worst atrocities of colonial rule - on Saturday, the British envoy to India says his country regrets the killing but offered no apology. "We will never forget what happened here".

Saturday marked the centenary of the bloodbath in Jallianwala Bagh when British forces led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on unarmed, innocent Indians, including women and children, who had gathered there to hold a peaceful protest against the oppressive Rowlatt Act of the British government.

Demands by several past Indian leaders and politicians for Britain to apologize for the massacre have fallen on deaf ears.

Many dignitaries during the remembrance, including Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, and Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, reached the memorial and remembered the martyrs. Their valour and sacrifice will never be forgotten. "We salute the people of India who gave everything they had for it. Jai Hind", wrote Mr. Gandhi in the visitor's book at the Jallianwala Bagh memorial after paying homage to the martyrs.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is one of the darkest chapters in the history of India's freedom struggle. Hundreds of people marched through Amritsar to the gardens last Friday, holding candles and flags and singing patriotic songs.

Australia to conduct federal elections on May 18, PM Scott Morrison announces
Rudd's helm as prime minister was, however, short-lived as Tony Abbott of Liberal party came to power in the 2013 election. Asked for his response to Labor's campaign, Morrison replied: "I believe in a fair go for those who have a go".

"This was truly shocking considering that the Prime Minister is the chairman of the Jallianwala Bagh Trust", Singh said. Upon his arrival, the Congress chief, accompanied by Singh, went straight to the Golden Temple and paid obeisance at the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs.

"I would just ask you to respect what I came here to do, which was to commemorate those who died 100 years ago, to express the sorrow of the British government and of the British people", Asquith said.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pay tributes to the martyrs of the incident.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday told parliament that Britain "deeply regretted what happened and the suffering caused".

Terming the Jallianwala Bagh as a tragedy that created a new consciousness in an India grappling with pulling the British down, Khattar lamented that, in the present times, nationalism seemed in short supply.

'You might want to re-write history, as the Queen said, but you can't, ' said Dominic Asquith, Britain's high commissioner to India.
