Democrats give Trump 10 days to hand over tax returns

BernieCare 2.0 Unveiled Five Senate Democrats Running for President Endorse Outlawing Private Insurance Massive Tax Hikes

But in the letter, Mr Neal told IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig: "None of the concerns raised can legitimately be used to deny the committee's request".

Democratic lawmakers on Saturday gave tax authorities a final deadline of April 23 to hand over President Donald Trump's tax returns, which Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the administration was considering.

Trump broke with a long-established norm during the 2016 elections by refusing to release his income tax returns, as most presidents have done since the 1970s even though it is not required by law.

Last week, Neal sent a formal request to the IRS for Mr. Trump's tax returns, arguing the committee "has a responsibility to conduct oversight of our voluntary Federal tax system and determine how Americans - including those elected to our highest office - are complying with those laws". The law says simply that the Treasury "shall furnish" such data when requested.

United States congressional Democrats have given the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) a final deadline of April 23 to hand over President Donald Trump's tax returns.

Trump argues that he can not release his tax returns because they are being audited, but the IRS has said this is no impediment to their release.

Neal first wrote to Rettig on April 3 with a narrowly tailored request for seveal years-worth of returns for both Trump and a number of his businesses, giving the IRS a week to respond.

USA congressional Democrats on Saturday headed for a showdown with the Internal Revenue Service over President Donald Trump's tax returns, setting a new hard deadline of April 23 for the federal tax agency to hand the documents over to lawmakers.

Congressional Republicans have condemned Neal's request as a political fishing expedition by Democrats, while the White House has said the documents will "never" be turned over.

Mnuchin said he thought Neal was just picking arbitrary deadline and he refused to speculate how the administration would proceed if the issue goes to court.

Mnuchin said that Treasury Department lawyers have been working "diligently" to research the issues involved and have been in contact with Justice Department attorneys.

Neal also wrote that concerns about the committee's access to the returns were "baseless".

Constitutionally, Neal has the power to demand the IRS release tax returns for any USA individual.

Neal wrote in the letter Saturday that Congress has "broad" power to investigate, and the IRS code 6103 is "unambiguous" and does not need to be reviewed by the Treasury or Justice Department. "If you fail to comply, your failure will be interpreted as a denial of my request".
