Group Applauds House Democrats' Efforts To Restore Net Neutrality

House of Representatives passes bill to restore net neutrality

Net neutrality backers argue that clear rules are needed to prevent dominant internet service providers like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T from blocking or throttling services or websites for competitive reasons.

Chairman Ajit Pai released a statement Wednesday criticizing the "so-called "Save the Internet" Act". "We're still on the side of net neutrality, they're still not, and they believe they won at the FCC".

Republicans have said the bill would open the door to the FCC imposing rate regulations or adding taxes to internet service similar to levies on cable or phone bills. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday the bill was "dead on arrival".

Under the Trump administration, the Federal Communications Commission voted in 2017 to toss out the net neutrality rules put in place in 2015 under the Obama administration.

By contrast, Commissioner Geoffrey Starks said he was glad the House passed the Save the Internet Act.

Win McNamee/Getty Images Net neutrality advocates actually have something to be happy about today - a federal appeals court heard arguments earlier today against the Federal Communications Commission's net neutrality repeal.

Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, argued the Democratic-backed bill could lead to a bipartisan dialogue. "There has to be some sort of cop on the beat", he said in an interview.

Even if proponents do manage to convince Senators to support it, the White House has threatened to veto the bill. The bill still needs to pass the Senate before being sent to the President but this is an important first step. Millions of Americans have repeatedly told the FCC they want strong net neutrality protections and oversight of broadband providers, and polling consistently shows more than 80 percent of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents support the policies passed by the House today. Wicker also said that he's open to bringing a bipartisan net neutrality bill possibly later this year.

The "Save the Internet" Act will go to the Senate for consideration. "Our bill protects consumers and small businesses from abusive and discriminatory practices by internet service providers and protects free speech and innovation".
