Kelly requests to perform overseas for concert

An overseas trip by R. Kelly is in limbo after his criminal attorney asked for more time to provide details to the court about concerts the singer wants to perform in Dubai in mid-April

R. Kelly's legal team has recently filed a motion to lift his travel restrictions as he awaits trial, noting that the singer is contractually obligated to perform between 3-5 shows in the United Arab Emirates between April 17 - 19.

Kelly, 52, was indicted last month on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving three underage girls and a woman over a dozen years. Steven Greenberg, Kells attorney, didn't provide any further explanation to the judge aside from saying that he wanted to give additional material to Judge Lawrence Flood.

Kelly's entertainment lawyer, Douglas Anton, said Friday that Kelly had numerous offers for performances in the US and overseas and material for new albums and that, professionally, " things were "looking up" for the singer. He said celebrity singers often go to Dubai for appearances, then arrange concerts.

"I think the judge would be in a better position to rule in our favor if we had a little more detail in the motion", he said. This past week, his attorney filed a request on the singer's behalf for permission to travel overseas for a show, claiming it's the only way he could generate income.

The next hearing is scheduled for May 7, the judge said on a livestream of today's hearing.

In 2008, Kelly was acquitted of child pornography charges connected to a videotape of him allegedly having sex with an underage girl.

Greenberg suggested he could schedule another court date soon to enable the singer, whose full name is Robert Kelly, to still perform in Dubai next month.

Despite court filings saying the sex-abuse allegations swirling around have led to the cancellation of several US concerts, Doug Anton, says he had 150 emails Kelly received asking him to perform "everywhere possible".

"Professionally, it's looking up", he said.

His attorneys say Kelly is also scrambling to pay child support because of the cancellation of IL concerts and a record contract.

But Dubai's luxury nightclubs often host hip hop and other artists for days at a time to perform and be seen among the millionaires of the skyscraper-studded city that is home to the world's tallest building.

Documents in several unrelated civil cases say Kelly in recent years typically made between $100,000 and $200,000 per concert.

In addition to the concerts in Dubai, Kelly is hoping to book other concerts in the USA and overseas.

"He hasn't been offered enough, I can tell you that", Greenberg said.
