New Zealand Will Ban 'Military-Style' Guns

NZ PM Jacinda Ardern Has Announced A National Ban On Military-Style Firearms

In light of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's announcement of the banning of all military-style semi-automatic firearms and assault rifles, Mr Bush said there would be a grace period for those in possession of these.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday, in a phone call with Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, expressed his admiration for the humane way that the Christchurch terror attack was handled by New Zealand authorities.

Australia subsequently banned semi-automatics and launched a buy-back program for such weapons.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist who was living in Dunedin, on New Zealand's South Island, has been charged with murder following the attack. It also applies to accessories used to convert guns into what the government called "military-style" weapons. In addition to the immediate stop on sales of weapons to avoid stockpiling, the government will use a buyback program to remove now-banned weapons from the streets.

She pointed out that Tarrant had purchased his weapons legally and enhanced their capacity by using 30-round magazines "done easily through a simple online purchase".

She also acknowledged the sacrifices of Pakistanis in the attack, particularly the bravery and valour of Mr. Naeem Rasheed, adding that New Zealand while valuing the contribution of the Muslim community assured them freedom and protections.

The minimum legal age to own a gun in New Zealand is now 16, or 18 for military-style semi-automatic weapons.

"The people injured in the mosque attacks are still our priority for specialist care, which for some includes follow-up surgery and although we are closer to being able to resume our planned surgery schedule we will still need to postpone some surgeries for the remainder of this week to free up theatre space and surgical teams".

Police said they had apologised to the person listed and would be fixing the charging document.

"My daughter would go out and shoot rabbits, with a semi-auto, with me, and then we'd skin and gut it, she'd cook and eat it and then go to ballet", he said. It'll take as much as $138 million to rid New Zealand of the deadliest of its 1.5 million firearms.

The government said the police and military would be exempt.

Ardern said that similar to Australia, the new gun laws will allow for strictly enforced exemptions for farmers to conduct pest control and animal welfare. It quoted Detective Superintendent Chris Page as saying the error did not affect the validity or legality of the prosecution.

Tarrant appeared in court Saturday on the first of what were expected to be multiple murder and other charges.

Iman Gamal Fouda says he's been discussing plans for the prayer service with city officials and lawmakers and expects it will take place in a park across from Al Noor mosque, where at least 42 were killed.

"They will bury the carpet", he said.
