Mobile is starting to test its own 50 Mbps home internet service

T-Mobile opens a home internet trial in rural and underserved areas

According to T-Mobile, 76 percent of rural households either don't have access to high-speed internet service or only have one provider to choose from.

The invitation-only pilot will connect around 50,000 homes of subscribers to a fixed wireless access (FWA) service on T-Mobile's LTE network.

T-Mobile's wireless home ISP will eventually be powered by the company's upcoming 5G network, but in the meantime it's revealing a 4G pilot program to test the idea out.

T-Mobile's CEO is confident that it can apply its usual level of disruption to the home internet market.

Facebook says issues fixed after finding user passwords in readable format
In Europe, Facebook is headquartered in Ireland, where it is regulated by the Irish Data Protection Commission. Update, 11:43 a.m.: Facebook has posted a statement about this incident here.

Cellular data companies are always looking to one-up each other, and T-Mobile's latest decision is yet another example of that. However, it's unclear whether or not T-Mobile will throttle your connection based on usage. You'll have to be a current T-Mobile customer in select areas.

T-Mobile plans to have 9.5 million 5G home broadband internet customers by 2024. 100Mbps would be great for rural customers, but by 2024 most U.S. households will expect more than that.

Besides expanded home Internet service, the post-merger T-Mobile "will be armed with spectrum and network assets that will build the highest capacity wireless network in United States history, covering millions with 5G, not just a few people in a few blocks of a few cities like the other guys", T-Mobile said today. The company claims its service will be offered at an aggressively low price, with no annual service contracts or installation charges, but actual numbers are decidedly lacking at this point. "A core promise of New T-Mobile is our commitment to bring real competition and real choice for in-home broadband to rural America", Legere said earlier this month.

T-Mobile has been pushing its Home Internet service as a major benefit to its proposed merger with Sprint. As the company announced on its official website, it will soon begin laying a foundation for "home broadband" ahead of its merger with Sprint. It stands to reason that T-Mobile could ultimately expand its home Internet service to large portions of the country without buying Sprint, but admitting that might undercut T-Mobile's claim that it needs the merger to do so. Its fixed wireless service will start out in rural and underserved areas. That's sure to earn T-Mobile some goodwill as it tries to reduce the number of national U.S. carriers from four to three.
