Five mosques vandalized in central England

A mosque in Birmingham has its windows boarded up after they were allegedly shattered overnight

They received further reports of a similar incident at a mosque in a nearby locality, after which officials began patrols and found more damage at two other locations.

Windows at five Birmingham mosques were shattered with a sledgehammer early Thursday, according to United Kingdom officials, who said counter-terrorism officers are probing the incidents.

Almost a week after attacks in two Christchurch mosques in New Zealand, in a string of attacks, five mosques in Birmingham, UK were targeted with a sledgehammer.

The incidents came almost a week after a 28-year-old Australian citizen opened fire at two mosques in New Zealand's Christchurch city and killed 50 people last Friday.

The force added the incidents were "being treated as linked".

Labour Councillor for Bromford and Hodge Hill Majid Mahmood said that the Witton Road Islamic Centre in Aston had been attacked overnight.

A spokesperson for the Witton Road Islamic Centre in Aston said CCTV captures recorded a man smashing windows at about 01:30.

A fifth mosque later reported that windows had been smashed.

The Counter-Terrorism Unit is investigating the incident.

"The force and the counter terrorism unit are working side-by-side to find whoever is responsible". "We are appalled by such acts of hate/terror", the council's statement quoted by BBC said.

"At the moment we don t know the motive for last night s attacks", said Chief Constable Dave Thompson in a statement.

"At hard times like this, it is incredibly important that everyone unites against those who seek to create discord, uncertainty and fear in our communities".
