Sugary drinks linked with increased risk of death, study shows

Drinking Sugary Beverages Linked with Early Death

The link between sugary drinks and cardiovascular disease mortality was a little stronger for women than for men, which the researchers speculated could be down to metabolic differences between the sexes. The effect was so pronounced that the research revealed that even drinking one artificially sweetened beverage (ASB) per day instead of a sugary one helped.

People who consume lots of sugary sodas and sports drinks every day may be more likely to die early of causes like heart disease and cancer than people who rarely if ever indulge in these beverages, a U.S. study suggests.

Lead author Vasanti Malik, of Harvard University, said: "Our results provide further support to limit intake of SSBs and to replace them with other beverages, preferably water, to improve overall health".

The research also looked at the link between artificially sweetened beverages and death.

The study, led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, covered almost 120,000 people over a period of decades and a list of their lifestyle habits, including how frequently they drank sugary beverages such as sodas and other sugary drinks - including sports drinks with sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup or sucrose.

Sodas, sports drinks and other sugar sweetened beverages are the single largest source of added sugar in the American diet, researchers note in Circulation. While SSB consumption had been dropping in the US over the past decade, there's been an increase in consumption among USA adults in recent years. Artificial sweeteners have also been linked to weight gain and diabetes.

CNN: Study Links Sugary Drinks to Higher Risk of Premature Death

Frequent consumption of sugary drinks such as sodas, sports drinks and juice is linked to an increased risk of premature death from cardiovascular disease and, to a lesser extent, from cancer, according to new research.

"Drinking water in place of sugary drinks is a healthy choice that could contribute to longevity".

Beverages, like energy drinks, can be deceiving because they are often advertised as healthy but usually are loaded with calories and sugar.

When people drink sodas and other sugary beverages, they may be more likely to develop risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and other chronic health problems, Malik said. Common forms of added sugars are sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, dextrose, corn syrups, concentrated fruit juice, and honey.

We often hear we should drink water every day, but that can seem like a challenge if you aren't a big fan.
