Fridays for Future: Students hold global climate change protests

Youth Climate Strike

Students in New York City skipped class Friday to join the Youth Climate Strike US - part of a worldwide movement of young people demanding legislative action to address climate change. Thunberg has since been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless activism from the past eight months. School students remained in Sallies Quad for the protest, whilst university students took the march off down the pavements of North Street.

"Climate change is worse than Voldemort", read one student's handmade sign in Wellington, New Zealand, referring to the evil wizard in the hugely popular Harry Potter books and films.

Last year, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed in an alarming report that even if we meet the targets set by the Paris climate accord and stop our reliance on fossil fuels, the world faces serious impacts of climate change.

Students hold signs protesting pipelines and paying tribute to victims of natural disasters. Police said 16 protesters were arrested on disorderly conduct charges for blocking traffic at the museum.

This will be the third climate student rally Hamilton has staged, and says she hasn't received any grief from her school.

Her actions got her noticed and now her #FridaysForFuture have inspired other young people to take to the streets to ask governments to do more.

PROTESTER: Theresa May, wherever you are, if you are seeing this, our protest is not a waste of time.

"Throughout the day, The Guardian will highlight the voices of young people from the US and around the world who have never known a world where the climate isn't rapidly heating", Jane Spencer, deputy editor of The Guardian US, wrote in a post on The Guardian US.

"Earth deserves a future, so do we".

Scientists have warned for decades that current levels of greenhouse gas emissions are unsustainable, so far with little effect.

"This is important and I don't think they understand that we actually care about this", said one secondary student. So you can do stuff like trying to save plastic, like using reusable water bottles, saying no to single use cutlery.

The action comes two days after the release of a United Nations report stating Arctic winter temperatures will increase by as much as five degrees Celsius compared to 1986-2005 levels, even if Paris Agreement goals are met. "Power comes from the people, so if we start rallying, then change is going to happen".
