China's home price growth slips to 10-month low as economy slows

Chinese Slowdown Deepens: Industrial Output at 17-Year Low

Despite the uncertain external environment and the downward pressure on the economy, the economic operations in the first two months were generally stable with investment growth accelerating, spokesperson for China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Mao Shengyong said. Factory output growth had been expected to slow to 5.5 percent from December's 5.7 percent.

China is grappling with a decline in global demand - most notably from the United States, which launched a trade war past year.

Expects economic growth to remain steady.

Property sales by floor area fell 3.6 percent year-on-year in the January-February period, compared with a 1.3 percent gain in 2018, official data showed.

The National Bureau of Statistics, which released the figures on Thursday, only provides combined output data for January and February to smooth the impact of the timing of the Lunar New Year holiday, which fell in early February this year.

Growth in fixed-asset investment, a major growth driver in the past, quickened to 6.1 percent in the first two months of this year, slightly more than analysts had expected and edging up marginally from 5.9 percent in 2018.

Chancellor confirms three-year Spending Review imminent subject to a Brexit deal
Earlier yesterday, the government unveiled plans for temporary tariffs if the United Kingdom crashes out without a deal. The OBR forecast growth of 1.2% this year, 1.4% next year and 1.6% in the following three years.

China's retail sales of consumer goods held steady in the first two months of the year, with strong growth in online sales and the catering sector, official data showed Thursday.

That processing rate works out at about 12.68 million barrels per day (bpd), according to Reuters calculations based on the NBS data, exceeding the previous daily high hit in September at 12.49 million bpd.

In particular, Capital Economics and others noted that infrastructure investment has not improved as much as hoped after the government began fast-tracking road and rail projects a year ago, raising the risk of a milder-than-expected bounce in construction when work resumes in warmer weather.

Beijing has tried to restart spending. Most of the 70 cities surveyed by the NBS still reported monthly price increases for new homes, though the number was down to 57 from 58 in January. The pressure on unemployment could also be due to the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China.

In the January to February period, exports stood at 2.4 trillion yuan, while imports were 2.1 trillion yuan. Retail sales rose 9 percent from one year earlier to 38.1 trillion yuan (about 5.7 trillion USA dollars) in 2018. China, however, is not alone in facing trade woes.
