As many as 49 people lost their lives and 48 were injured on Friday (March 15) in the mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques.

In a statement Anning blamed Muslims - who were the target of the attack - and immigration for the sickening attack.

And New Zealand's high commissioner to Australia, Dame Annette King, has condemned Anning's words and says she is "absolutely delighted" he has been condemned by Australia's government and people too.

Within hours of the massacres, Senator Anning issued a statement saying the "real cause" of the bloodshed was New Zealand's immigration program, implicitly blaming the victims for their own deaths.

Senator Anning responded: "Well he's obviously a little on the insane side, but yeah".

The attention seeking Fraser Anning, who is a far-right independent senator was being interviewed over his comments when a teenage boy appeared to crack an egg on the back of his head. The entire episode was captured on phone clearly showing the Senator hit him the young man in his face repeatedly.

The Senator was in Melbourne this afternoon to meet with some Victorian supporters of the new Conservative National Party.

Police said the boy was arrested but was released without charge pending a further investigation.

The former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull wrote: "Fraser Anning's comments today are contemptible".

In a video go viral on social media, a young boy smashed an egg over the senator's head as he was talking to journalists.

It will say the Senate calls on "all Australians to stand against hate and to publicly, and always, condemn actions and comments created to incite fear and distrust".

An anti-immigrant manifesto purportedly written by the man in police custody was posted on Twitter and the online forum 8chan shortly before the shootings.

News.com.au political reporter Sam Clench wrote: "The Australian senator now spewing racist garbage in response to the New Zealand mosque attack got 19 votes at the last election".
