40 dead in New Zealand mosque shootings

Mass shootings are rare in New Zealand, which tightened its gun laws to restrict access to semi-automatic rifles in 1992, two years after a mentally ill man shot dead 13 people in the South Island town of Aramoana. Three men and a woman have been arrested.

Bush told a news conference that a man has been charged with murder and will appear in court tomorrow. The judge said "it was reasonable to assume" more such charges would follow.

Police earlier said four people had been taken into custody, and one had been identified as Australian.

New Zealand was placed on its highest security threat level, Ardern said, adding that "this can now only be described as a terrorist attack".

He described the attacker as an "extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist".

YouTube content star PewDiePie has issued a response to having his name attached to the New Zealand mosque massacre, saying he was "sickened" by any connection to the incident.

One witness, who did not want to be named, said he was driving by the scene and saw a man with a "with his 3 or 4-year-old daughter" who had been shot in the back. What looked like the same weapons appeared in the livestream of the mosque attack on Friday.

At least 48 people were wounded, some critically. He did not say whether police believed the same shooter was responsible for both attacks. According to the Herald, none were on any terrorism watch list.

Forty-one of those slain were at the Masjid al Noor in central Christchurch, police said.

The police commissioner warned anybody who was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand on Friday to stay put. An officer stopped him. From what we know, it does appear to have been very well planned.

Ardern went on to say that many of those who were directly affected could be migrants and refugees, stating, "They have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is their home".

The killings were condemned by political and Islamic leaders across Asia. It is the second most-populous city in New Zealand behind Auckland and Wellington. But it has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world. For many New Zealand was their choice, a place they actively came to and committed themselves to.it was a place where many came to for their safety. On Saturday, people across the country were reaching out to Muslims in their communities on social media to volunteer acts of kindness - offering rides to the grocery store or volunteering to walk with them if they felt unsafe.

New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that a total of 49 people have been killed and at least 20 others had been seriously injured.

The prime minister said the attack reflected "extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand".
