UK Parliament votes to delay Brexit but rejects second referendum

Former UKIP party leader Nigel Farage joins the start of the first leg of March to Leave the European Union in Sunderland England Saturday March 1

The following night, 13 ministers broke ranks and voted to take No Deal off the table.

A senior European Union official is floating the possibility of a two-step delay to Britain's departure from the bloc, now scheduled for March 29.

And a Survation poll for the Daily Mail found that that Conservative voters want hard-line Brexiteer and Remainer Tories to toe the line and back the Prime Minister. This means that May must apply for an extension to Article 50, which is the transition plan enacted by any member state that wants to withdraw from the EU.

On January 11th this year, Mrs May ruled out an extension via her official spokesman in response to remarks by the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary that Brexit might not happen if her deal was blocked, in an effort to assuage the concerns of Brexiteer MPs and voters that she would not deliver on 2016 referendum result as she promised before she became Prime Minister and in her 2017 election manifesto.

In the event of a Brexit delay to end-2020, European Union leaders could instruct their officials to negotiate with Britain on their future relationship: "In these 21 months to the end of 2020, we could say that we really want to negotiate straight away on the future relationship".

Alternatively, there could be a much longer delay, requiring the United Kingdom to take part in elections for the European Parliament in May, the prime minister has said, in the event her deal is not approved.

Leaders in other European Union states have already begun to question the goal of an extension, given the impasse plaguing British Parliament.

One cabinet minister has now told The Sun that they believed the chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady, would have to "tap her on the shoulder" and suggest that she leave her post.

A third round of voting witnessed MPs approving a motion calling for a delay to Brexit from March 29 to June 30, as long as May's deal is backed by March 20.

With less than two weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU, Mrs May seems to be clinging on to her waning authority by a thread after a series of humiliating defeats.

May is expected to again submit the withdrawal deal to lawmakers next week, though it has already been rejected twice.

Still, Mrs May has an arduous task ahead. Parliament voted this week to seek a delay of at least three months. "She will bring it back for a third time next week and (it) probably stands a better than 50-50 chance of passing despite everything".
