Mob Boss Killing Happened Near Neighborhood of MTV’s ‘Made in Staten Island’

The last crime family boss to be shot in NY was Paul Castellano, who was also a Gambino crime boss.

Cali becomes the first Mafia boss murdered in NY since Paul Castellano was gunned down outside Sparks steakhouse in Midtown in 1985.

Cali was then shot several times in the street and run over, before the pickup truck sped off.

Cali's body was found in an area of Staten Island that has been home to some of New York's most notorious mobsters and their families.

"There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing", a statement said.

Cali's only mob-related criminal conviction came a decade ago, when he pleaded guilty in an extortion scheme involving a failed attempt to build a Nascar track on Staten Island.

Following Castellano's murder, Gotti headed the Gambino family until his incarceration for conspiracy and murder in 1992.

One of the most notorious gangs of NY is at the center of a new mob murder mystery.

Alleged Gambino Crime Family Boss Frank Cali Shot Dead Outside Home

Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali is said to have taken over the running of the organisation from Domenico Cefalu in 2015.

"Anybody who was making a move on boss of a crime family - besides a one-off renegade, you know, insane character - would have to have the backing of captains in that crime family".

After reportedly taking the reins in 2015, Cali was described by mafia watchers as the opposite of Gotti because "no-one ever sees him", the New York Post reported.

Staten Island's affluent Todt Hill neighbourhood is renowned for its crime connections.

Shea said there has been a slight uptick in alleged mob-related violence in NY within the past year.

"We thought those days were over", Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Cali's slaying.

Last October, Bonanno crime family associate Sylvester Zottola, 71, was gunned down at a Bronx McDonald's drive-thru as he waited for a coffee.

But he had been caught on CCTV cameras leaving and entering the house at the time of the murder, and his DNA was discovered from the trigger of the gun used to commit the crime.
