Federation Internationale de Football Association says 48-team tournament 'feasible'

FIFA President Gianni Infantino addresses the media after a key meeting of football's world governing body in Miami

The World Cup is already growing to 48 teams from 2026, when the tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. No host nation has been decided yet, Infantino said.

Europe's top clubs have said they will boycott FIFA's proposed new Club World Cup in a major blow to Gianni Infantino's plans to revamp the competition. But it's not as easy as that.

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das had confirmed the development to the Indian Express and said, "We want to bid for the under-17 women's world cup and wanted to understand the procedure".

Venues in at least one more country would be required to cope with the additional 16 teams and 16 games under the expansion proposal. "Then together, with our partners from Qatar, we will present eventually a proposal in this respect".

"We went through a consultation process, spoke with everyone, some agree, others disagree, you have different views and positions", said Infantino. "I was very pleased by the reaction of Qatar".

Therefore, the FIFA Council agreed to extend the mandate of the FIFA Task Force for Future Competitions to continue exploring the idea of a worldwide Nations League, with no specific time frame having been set at this stage. "If it doesn't happen, fantastic also", said Infantino. If it doesn't, fantastic as well.

A quadrennial version would launch in June-July 2021 to replace the current Club World Cup, a seven-team event played each December. Like the men's under-17 World Cup, the women's edition, too, has to be held in October and November.

"The world will now see a real Club World Cup, where fans will see the best teams in the world compete to be crowned the real world champions", he added.

Saudi Arabia rejects call for global probe of Khashoggi murder
Interpol issued the notices on March 1, the ministry said on Twitter, without giving further details on the suspects. Eleven men are on trial in Saudi Arabia, accused of involvement in the killing.

The announcement comes in the face of considerable opposition from European clubs. The letter was signed by 15 members of the ECA board, including officials from Barcelona, Manchester United and Ajax.

The ECA says a decision on potential new competitions can only be made as part of an agreed framework for the global match calendar post-2024.

A leaked letter from the powerful European Club Association (ECA) to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin stated that its clubs would refuse to take part.

"ECA clubs will not participate in 2021 CWC and will asses participation in editions of the competition post-[2024]", the statement read.

"I am always happy but especially today because we have taken some important decisions".

Infantino also provided an update on organization of the upcoming Women's World Cup, saying that the preparations were going well.

It will be the first time VAR has been used at the tournament, having made its debut in the men's World Cup past year in Russian Federation.
