"I am utterly opposed to any form of violence within our community, and I totally condemn the actions of the gunman", Senator Anning said.

Queensland senator Fraser Anning has been egged while speaking to the media at a political meeting at Moorabbin in Melbourne's south-east.

"Today's shootings in Christchurch highlight the growing fears within our community both in Australia and New Zealand over the increasing Muslim presence".

He went on to claim the real cause of the bloodshed that's left at least 49 people dead is New Zealand's immigration policy.

Mr Shanmugam said that the comments by senator Fraser Anning described Islam as a violent, fascist religion promoting savage beliefs.

Citing a verse from the Bible, he added that "those who follow a violent religion that calls on them to murder us, can not be too surprised when someone takes them at their word and responds in kind".

Australian senator Fraser Anning has blamed the terror attacks which claimed at least 49 lives at two mosques in Christchurch on Muslim immigrants. Twitter has confirmed that an account matching the suspect's name has been deleted, and numerous media outlets report that the account had tweeted a white nationalist manifesto in the moments before the attack.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison earlier hit out at the independent senator's comments in a tweet on Friday. In the Australian Parliament also. "He is a disgrace to the Senate, and what is worse, by spreading hatred and turning Australians against each other, he is doing exactly what the terrorists want".

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who labelled Senator Anning's comments as "disgusting", said Labor would support a parliamentary censure motion of the "rogue" Queensland senator.

"Parliament, I'm sure, will express a very clear view about what he's had to say", Mr Morrison said. The mosques were full of worshippers attending Friday prayers.

Calling Friday one of the country's "darkest days", New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the shootings as a "well-planned terrorist attack".
