Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg nominated for Norway's Nobel Peace Prize

Hundreds of schoolchildren take part in a climate protest in Hong Kong Friday

The protests are part of a global movement that is demanding action from governments and politicians on climate change.

Her strikes, held daily before Sweden's national election and on Fridays afterwards, inspired students worldwide to call on their own elected officials to take decisive action to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.

Since then, the protests have snowballed.

"I've contacted strike groups through Instagram in Manchester, West Australia, New Zealand", says Hutten.

"The flood we just had wasn't just a normal flood, it was a one-in-100-year event".

We speak on behalf of all the students, youth and adults who care about this issue in Hong Kong and who strike today. "Because in a sense, it's incredibly fearless not to go to school for once".

At the 2015 Paris climate conference, countries pledged to work to limit the rise to 2 degrees Celsius, a step that will require a radical reduction in the use of coal and fossil fuels.

He said members of the student group have discussed the walkout with school officials. "One of those is compatible with life, the other isn't".

Tomorrow, however, Greta and her fellow environmentalists are gearing up for their largest global protest yet, with thousands of schoolchildren attending protests in 105 different countries - and counting.

However, when the Listener asked if parents and grandparents should march over climate change inaction, respondents were less enthusiastic, with 28% and 37% respectively saying no, and 32% and 27% saying they were not sure.

Other changes needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions include ramping up renewable energy production, reigning in over-consumption culture now spreading beyond the industrialized West and changing diets, experts say.

I think that change is on the horizon and the people will stand up for their future, Thunberg said in an interview with the Guardian. She has since inspired hundreds of thousands to do the same, creating the #FridaysForFuture movement, which has enlisted thousands of young people to skip school this Friday to march for policy action on environmental issues.

A United Nations report released this week blames climate change, population growth, pesticides, plastics pollution and water contaminated with hormone-changing chemicals for killing millions of people every year.
