North Korea considering suspending nuclear talks with US

According to Choe, the decision will be included in an official statement from Kim concerning the direction North Korea plans to take in the wake of the Hanoi summit.

Choe issued no direct criticism of the US president and stressed that Trump and Kim have good chemistry.

United Nations -led sanctions were a major sticking point, with Pyongyang calling for the lifting of several Security Council sanctions against it in return for dismantling the Yongbyon nuclear complex under the monitoring of US experts.

"In Hanoi, on multiple occasions, he spoke directly to the President and made a commitment that he would not resume nuclear testing" or missile testing, Pompeo said.

"That's Chairman Kim's word", Mr Pompeo said. The U.S. has said since then that it will only accept its definition of "complete denuclearization" - the total dismantlement of North Korea's weapons of mass destruction program.

"We continue to work" to deliver on that, Pompeo said.

"I saw the remarks [Ms Choe] made - she left open the possibility negotiations would continue". "We are hopeful we can continue to have conversations and negotiations".

North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui reportedly said at a press conference in Pyongyang that Kim and Trump's relationship was still "good and the chemistry is mysteriously wonderful".

Choe further said she expects Kim to soon "clarify his position" on the launch and test moratorium, the Associated Press reported.

"We have no intention to yield to the USA demands [made at the Hanoi summit] in any form, nor are we willing to engage in negotiations of this kind", TASS quoted Choe as telling reporters in Pyongyang.

The second Trump-Kim summit broke down over differences about USA demands for Pyongyang to denuclearize and North Korea's demand for dramatic relief from global sanctions imposed for its nuclear and missile tests, which it pursued for years in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

'What is clear is that the US has thrown away a golden opportunity this time, ' she said.

Pyongyang has long sought a summit with the U.S.to reflect what the regime sees as its status as a regional military power. We never asked for the removal of sanctions in their entirety'.

What was the U.S. position?

"It was all about the sanctions".

They want to take the measure of Trump again, perhaps an indication that they really are confused over what happened in Hanoi. "Sometimes you have to walk and this was one of those times", he said.

"As a result, the summit ended with no significant result", the North Korean diplomat said. Their second meeting was in Hanoi in February.

In Washington this week, the US special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, said the United States expected to be able to continue its close engagement, though he offered no specifics on when new talks might be held.

So does this mean a return to "fire and fury"?

"We should not concede to North Korea's threats", he stressed. Pyongyang is aware that Donald Trump has boasted about his ability to get Mr Kim to stop firing missiles and testing nuclear missiles.

Joel Wit of the 38 North think tank said North Korea was likely toughening its negotiating position after the collapse of the Hanoi summit.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton "created the atmosphere of hostility and mistrust and, therefore, obstructed the constructive effort for negotiations between the supreme leaders of North Korea and the United States", TASS quoted Choe as saying.

DPRK Vice Foreign Minister Im Chon Il on Thursday met with his Russian counterpart Igor Morgulov in Moscow amid speculation that DPRK leader Kim Jong Un could also pay his first trip to the neighboring country, reported Yonhap.
