Brexit: MPs to vote on 29 March no-deal exit from EU

Labour leader Corbyn demands general election after Theresa May’s Brexit defeat

'While an extension of Article 50 is now inevitable, responsibility for that extension lies exclusively and squarely at the Prime Minister's door'. May is running out of time for any meaningful changes to be made to the political declaration accompanying her deal.

In a later exchange, with the Conservative pro-Brexit MP Peter Bone, May expressed her scepticism about the so-called Malthouse compromise, outlined in an amendment to Wednesday's motion, which calls for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union without a withdrawal agreement, but with a form of transition period to lessen the impact of no deal. The first was from Sarah Wollaston, the former Conservative MP and now a member of The Independent Group (TIG), who offered an amendment to the main motion requesting a second referendum.

Numerous EU leaders expressed their dismay after MPs voted by 391 to 242 votes to reject Mrs May's deal.

But he said the House of Commons should "explore other options" in order to break the Brexit stalemate.

Although the PM managed to convince about 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, it was not almost enough to overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered on the same deal in January.

Ahead of the no-deal Commons vote, the government announced that most imports into the United Kingdom would not attract a tariff in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Earlier in the day, British MPs also rejected another amendment that sought to delay Brexit until May 22 by extending the Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty.

He said: "Isn't it time she moved on from her red lines and faced the reality of the situation that she has got herself, her government and this country into". Tariffs would be maintained to protect some industries, including agriculture.

Some of her colleagues around the Cabinet table think it shows she has to tack to a closer deal with the EU.

"The prime minister has been stubbornly declaring that the only choice is between her deal and no deal", Corbyn said.

Within government, there is renewed optimism that success is possible.

"We are all affected by Brexit", he told The Telegraph.

A No 10 spokesman said she did not discuss resigning after her latest defeat because her government had recently won a confidence vote in the Commons.

Meanwhile, Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, warned Tuesday that the European Union was no longer interested in negotiating a new deal.

Leading Tory Remainers and Brexiteers, including Dominic Grieve and Boris Johnson, have suggested the prime minister's deal is now "finished" and other options must be brought forward. To do this, ministers have promised indicative votes if the Government can't pass a deal - but, importantly, at a time of their choosing.
