Bencic dethrones Osaka in Indian Wells for second No.1 win

Tennis: Osaka finds positives despite Indian Wells upset

Bencic's win was her second ever against a world number one.

The previous year has been a whirlwind for the Japanese, who defeated her idol Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final in a match best remembered for the American's heated argument with the chair umpire as Osaka looked on.

Collins, trying to build on a breakout run to the Australian Open semi-finals, failed in her bid to avenge her 6-1, 6-0 loss to Osaka in their only prior meeting in Beijing previous year.

"I don't really play that often, so when I do, I need to play well", she said.

"I think it's always a bit tricky whenever you change someone in the team, but I feel like for a first tournament we did really well", she said of her partnership with Jenkins, a former United States collegiate star who served as a hitting partner to Venus Williams from 2015 until the end of last season.

"But I feel pretty good right now, because I think, given the circumstances, I tried my best and I don't really have any regrets. She is an incredible player".

Bencic, who turned 22 on Sunday, is back on the rise after a string of injuries stalled a career that had exploded with two precocious WTA titles in 2015.

The victory over Osaka came in "very high" in her list of big wins.

"I'm so happy to be through and so happy with my play". "She won everything in the past couple of months", Bencic said.

Does anyone want to guess what the secret name the Life of Kylie star is holding onto for her next baby girl is? However, she didn't share her second choice. "And I feel like that's the trick for me, personally".

She next faces Estonian Anett Kontaveit, who was leading 5-0 against 11th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova when the Latvian retired from their match. I'm really happy with myself. "It's not going to get any easier from here, so I just have to continue to raise my game".

"I liked my chances more at night against Kohlschreiber, but it wasn't to be last night", Djokovic said.

The Swiss has not lost since January, while Osaka will remain number one after the tournament following Halep's elimination.

World number two Simona Halep of Romania is also out, beaten 6-2 3-6 6-2 by Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova.

Halep, who received treatment for blisters on her foot during the match, hit just six winners and piled up 36 unforced errors.

"I was running too much and too defensive", the Romanian told reporters. I knew that she's young, and she has nothing to lose today.

Osaka said the first title defense of her career had brought different challenges, and she thought she handled them well. Bencic has thrashed four top 10 players in Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships held in February 2019. Venus Williams reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mona Barthel.

Following Fed Cup and her Dubai title over Petra Kvitova, Bencic has now won her last 11 matches. "Yeah, I think I did well for my first time".
