Italy bans unvaccinated kids from school

A protestor speaks out against mandatory vaccination in Italy in July 2017. Italy's mandatory vaccination law came into effect in March 2019

If they're between ages 7 to 16, their parents will face a fine.

Children under six can be barred from attending nursery schools and kindergartens if their parents fail to present written evidence that they have had the required vaccinations.

"Now, children who are not vaccinated will endanger other children at school who are too small for vaccines or can not be vaccinated because they suffer from immunosuppressive diseases".

Parents are at risk of being fined up to €500 (AUD$800) if they sent their unvaccinated children to school and children under six can be turned away.

A 2017 law mandated children enrolled in Italian schools receive 10 different vaccines, the Times wrote, in "response to a worrisome decline in vaccinations nationwide and a measles outbreak that same year".

Some children were denied entry to schools on Tuesday but the numbers appeared to be modest.

"No vaccine, no school", Giulia Grillo, Italy's Minister of Health, told La Repubblica. However, the B.C. government has said that it is only planning to require mandatory reporting of vaccination status in the upcoming school year.

There have been protests over the law changes around vaccinations in Italy.

Some are sending letters of suspension to families, but in some areas there have been no reported cases and in others there has been a longer grace period to get up to date with the schedule. With rates below 80 percent, the country lags far behind the World Health Organization's 95 percent target.
