HP Expands Laptop Battery Recall to 78,500 Units

HP recalled more batteries in January but gov shutdown delayed news

According to ZDNet's sister site CNET, the recall expansion of 78,500 laptop batteries occurred in January 2019, but is only now receiving widespread circulation due to the USCPSC not announcing the recall at the time due to the USA government shutdown.

Consumers with the product are asked to visit HP's website to see if their battery is included in the recall.

Back in January 2018, HP issued a battery recall covering 50,000 laptop batteries which had the potential to overheat and become either a burn of fire hazard.

According to HP, many of these faulty laptop batteries are non-removable, which means they can not be replaced by the consumer. The recall was expanded a year later with HP voluntarily recalling a number of additional batteries back in January 2019. Given that most batteries are nonremovable by end users, it amounts to the same thing on your end - you still have to ship your laptop off somewhere.

This is part of a continuing series of battery recalls from HP. Following this recall expansion, around a quarter of a million laptop batteries have been recalled by HP in a two-and-a-half-year span.

Facebook, Instagram experiencing outages
As far as we're aware, Google is back to normal by now, and Facebook is still working to right its servers and connectivity. What they're not saying is that some people are having trouble accessing Facebook at all , let alone the family of apps.

"The batteries were sold with or as accessories for select laptops and workstations, including some ProBooks models, the HP x360 310 G2, Pavilion x360 11", the HP ENVY 15, Mobile Thin Clients mt21, mt22, and mt31, and select others.

The batteries were sold at retailers nationwide and online along with computers and mobile workstations from December 2015 through April 2018 and cost between $300 and $4,000. Some of the bad batches were also sold separately as replacements between December 2015 and December 2018.

HP also warns, "It is essential to recheck your battery, even if you did so previously and were informed that it was not affected". The website provides consumers instructions on how to initiate the validation utility to check their battery and what to download if their battery is included in the recall.

Updated 1:30 p.m. ET: Added clarification from HP.
