Google is redeploying Pixel staff, raising questions on its future hardware plans

Google is reportedly cutting back on hardware, moving some workers to new jobs

For anyone who has been following Google's hardware, this report probably doesn't come as a surprise, because despite releasing ambitious devices like the Pixelbook and Pixel C, there's always been a major issue or two holding those gadgets back from mainstream appeal. There's been no word yet of similarly reassigning workers out of other hardware areas such as those that are responsible for Google's Pixel smartphone line or its wearable devices.

According to Business Insider (subscription required), citing "several people familiar with the matter", Google has told dozens of employees at its Create hardware division to find jobs elsewhere within Google and Alphabet at large. Hardware Engineers, Technical Program Managers and related supporting staff have been given notice of these "roadmap cutbacks".

Manufacturing roles within Create were not reportedly not impacted by the recent downsizing, which indicates that Google's near term product lineup may be unaffected.

According to Business Insider, Google is now in the process of implementing a number of "roadmap cutbacks". Given the competition within the laptop market, this isn't too surprising.

This app helps MAGA enthusiasts find 'Trump-friendly' businesses
An Oklahoma developer launched "63red Safe", one of three apps from conservative website 63red.com founded by Scott Wallace. Wallace said that his intentions were to get "politics out of local businesses [and] local restaurants".

Since its introduction in 2016, the Made by Google initiative has led to a number of successful products ranging from smartphones to smart speakers.

Although the Pixel Slate and Pixelbook boast a premium design and pack decent hardware, their value proposition is low and software optimizations were questionable and often show the company's lack of commitment towards improving Chrome OS. These changes have reportedly been prompted by cancellation of projects within the laptop and tablet division. The Pixelbook, like the Chromebook Pixel before it, is just a high-end Chrome OS laptop. One source confirmed that the company indeed had "a bunch of stuff in the works" prior to the employee shift.

The move comes after the group received pressure to turn Google Hardware into "a real business" from higher-ups at Google/Alphabet.
